Podcast Interview and Test of Ketone Esters

A friend of mine, Skyler Collins has a podcast called "Everything Voluntary" he invited me on and we talked about diet, nutrition, and the experience I had with my wife in the ICU.  Since my first post on this experience, Frank LLosa CEO of KetoneAid.com had reached out and sent me a couple boxes of their KE1 ketone esters.  We decided to try 2 bottles each at the beginning of the show and see if we felt any obvious effect. Skyler is not unfamiliar with ketosis and his family has been moving toward a paleo diet. I've been on a ketogenic / no sugar no grain, mostly fatty meats and vegetable diet for 5 years now so the majority of the time I'm in low-grade ketosis.  I was really not expecting the ketone esters to have much effect. I've always been more for getting into ketosis naturally but if ketone esters can be used to get people who are suffering there quicker and it's helpful I'm all for it.  You can do it with fasting but 18 to 24 hours of fasting vs 30 minutes is a huge boost.

The interview lasted about an hour and at the end, neither of us noticed significant effects from the ketone esters. However, I did note that this was the first time I'd not gotten emotional talking about my wife's last days in the ICU.  My wife's favorite song has always been Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko (Even if my hair is white).  When we first met I learned the song and spent time translating it from Tagalog into English so I'd understand its meaning.  Through the nearly 10 years of marriage, whenever she'd have trouble sleeping or when she didn't feel well I'd sing her to sleep with this song. Even though she was unconscious for the two weeks I was with her in the ICU, I'd sing this song to her thinking maybe she could hear it subconsciously and know I'm there for her. Even at this moment as I write, listening or singing this song sends tears streaming down my face.

So, on the way home after the interview, I sang the song through and surprisingly had no tears. The only thing I can think of is that for me having a higher level of ketones must be stabilizing to my emotions. I have heard others report that after switching to a ketogenic diet they no longer had issues with depression but I'm not sure how common this effect would be. It's not something most people would immediately notice.

The main driver for me even trying this ketone ester test is that newer research suggests the lung destroying cytokine storm appears to feed off excess blood glucose.  Our experiment and preliminary tests in new studies seem to confirm this is true. If true, current ICU feeding protocols are barbaric.  Ketone esters are not a drug and ketosis is a natural state for humans. Our bodies create ketones when we burn our fat reserves. More testing is needed in all stages of COVID-19 symptom progression and of course, any other illnesses causing Acute Respiratory Distress Disorder (ARDS).

I have two bottles left of KE1 ketone esters.  Two of my adult children will be trying them in the morning on an empty stomach.  They do not follow a ketogenic diet.  I'll post any observations they have as a later update to this article.
